Plot summary
To learn why a seventeen-year-old seminarian killed a boy in the countryside of the Cantal in 1905, Professor Lacassagne and the doctors working with him question Bruno Reidal and have him write the story of his life, from his earliest years to the day of the killing. Bruno describes a farm household where his mother and father beat him and sexually abused him, and where he kept his distance from his brothers and sisters. Feelings of wanting to kill had taken hold of him. The seminary struck him as the one way out of his family and of his own violent thoughts, yet there he could not master the urge to hurt the boys around him, and he carried the guilt of it without speaking. His attention settled on Blondel, another seminarian.

- The film is based on a real 1905 murder case, but "Bruno Reidal" was a pseudonym coined by the criminologist Alexandre Lacassagne for the real Jean-Marie Bladier, whom Lacassagne interviewed; director Vincent Le Port researched Lacassagne's papers.
- Dimitri Doré won the lead role after the actor Jean-Luc Vincent, who plays Doctor Lacassagne, saw him in a play and recommended him; Vincent Le Port was struck that Doré was the same height and weight as the real Bruno and had never acted in films.
- Vincent Le Port worked from the roughly 100 pages of memoirs the real Bladier wrote in jail, but only about seven or eight pages reached the film, and he had to cut material that was too expensive to stage.
- Casting director Bahijja El Amrani and Vincent Le Port searched for months for three actors to play Bruno Reidal at different ages, but their open call for non-professionals produced only the youngest, Alex Fanguin, who plays Bruno at six.
