Plot summary

In 1542, in Artigat, a village in southern France, Martin Guerre and Bertrande de Rols marry during the reign of Francis I. A few years later, accused of a robbery, Martin vanishes and leaves his wife behind. Almost a decade passes. Then a man arrives in Artigat saying that he is Martin, and the Guerre family takes him in. He remembers private matters from Martin's earlier life, and he recognizes the friends, the family and the wife of the man he claims to be. Bertrande accepts him as her husband. Not everyone in the village is persuaded, and doubts about who the newcomer really is spread among the villagers.
