Plot summary
Darious is fourteen and living with his mother Monica and his stepfather Malcolm during summer break. Malcolm warns him against fighting, remembering his own violent childhood and the strained relationship he had with his father. After another boy beats him in an altercation, Darious walks into a woodland area and meets Porter, a man who lives by himself on a small boat. Porter teaches him some self-defense skills.
