Plot summary
In 1944, army surgeon Kyoji Fujisaki is serving in the war and cuts his finger on a scalpel during an operation at a field hospital; blood from his patient Susumu Nakada infects him with syphilis. A test confirms it, but the medicine he needs is unavailable at the front, and he urges Nakada to seek treatment. After the war he works at his father's clinic and injects himself with Salvarsan in secret. He ends his six-year engagement to Misao Matsumoto rather than explain his illness to her. Rui Minegishi, an apprentice nurse at the clinic, sees him give himself an injection.
