Plot summary
In Scarborough, in Toronto, in the early 1990s, Francis and Michael are brothers and the sons of Jamaican immigrants. Their mother, Ruth, is a single nurse who works shifts, so Francis becomes Michael's best friend, protector and parent. As the brothers grow older they part ways, but the love among the three of them continues. In the summer of 1991 the two are part of the neighborhood's hip-hop scene, on streets marked by gang violence and police brutality. Michael's childhood sweetheart, Aisha, returns to the neighborhood after ten years, and her return pushes Michael to look again at his family's past. The story moves back and forth between the brothers' childhood and their teenage years.
