Plot summary

Sean Okden and his brother Mitchell grow up in Newcastle, an Australian steel town, with a coal-mining father who does not approve of Sean's dancing. Sean keeps the tap routines hidden. Mitchell earns his money as a small-time criminal. At a dance class Sean meets Linda, a local hairdresser, and falls in love with her. A role in a professional show takes him away from Newcastle, but the star of the production resents him and the star's girlfriend flirts with him. After an argument Sean outdances the star, punches him and is fired. He goes home to a steel mill that is winding down, and to a father who still will not accept a son who dances.
