Plot summary
Paul Sheffield, the man who took in Cathy, Chris and Carrie after they escaped Foxworth Hall, has died. A decade on, all three still carry the years of their grandmother's abuse and their mother's part in the attic. Corrine, who is renovating the mansion, has kept away from them, and Olivia is disabled after a stroke. Cathy is an aspiring ballet dancer whom Julian Marquet, a fellow dancer, invites to New York to try for the lead in Romeo and Juliet. Chris is in medical school and begins seeing Sarah Reeves, and Carrie is bullied at her elite high school for her small size. Cathy urges Chris to put the feelings they carried out of the attic behind them.

- A new character, Chris's love interest Sarah, was created for the movie, and the book's sexual relationship between Cathy and her adoptive father was removed to condense the story; director Kayla Alpert said that after doing incest, they decided they didn't need pedophilia on top of it.
- Production for the movie was rushed: Rose McIver began filming in February 2014, two weeks after her first audition, leaving her unable to read the novels before portraying Cathy. Immediately after filming was completed in March, she began work on iZombie.
- Writer Kayla Alpert announced that the film would take place ten years after Flowers in the Attic, whereas the book picked up directly after the events of the first. Alpert started the script shortly after finishing the first film's script.
