Plot summary
Albert Franklin is seven and lives with his mother Lorraine in Nevada, where she works as an assistant showgirl for the Vegas magician Antoine. When Lorraine is killed by a drunk driver, no one close to her can raise the boy: Antoine and his wife Babette travel too much, and the friends and babysitter are unable. Lorraine's will names Harriet Franklin, her childhood foster sister in New Jersey, as his guardian. Harriet, who manages restaurant supplies, at first refuses, then agrees when she learns Albert would otherwise become a ward of the state. Albert flies to Newark, grieving and withdrawn. On the plane a tall Frenchman in a trench coat, Bogus, climbs out of Albert's sketchbook, though no one else can see him, and urges the boy to give Harriet a chance.
