Plot summary
Jean Newman teaches physical education at a secondary school in Newcastle in 1988. A news broadcast on her way to work mentions the proposed Section 28 legislation, and she turns it off. At school she is reserved and stays closeted, and she makes excuses rather than join her coworkers after hours. Her evenings are spent at a lesbian bar with her girlfriend, Viv, and their friends. When a new student, Lois Jackson, arrives at the school, the two of them recognize each other at the bar.
