Plot summary
Meg lives in the Dayton, Ohio area and is finishing high school, writing poetry as an outlet from a troubled home life. Her father left and pays no child support, and her mother Diane works long hours, leaving Meg to look after her younger sister, Lily. Mr. Auster, her English teacher, is struck by the gift in the poem she reads to the class, and he takes her on as a writing student. She wins a local contest on his suggestion, and he points her toward the national finals held in Florida during spring break. Diane says there is no money for the trip.
