Plot summary
Two parties prize the same doll: the aristocratic White Mice and the Creatures Who Dwell Under the Oak, beaked beings who chirp like birds and live beneath a tree. The mice ask the creatures to make her. Once she is done, the creatures adore her and will not surrender her, and they hang her above the door of their house. An egg drifts down the stream, and the creatures place it inside the doll. The mice still want her for their own, and one night they carry her away from the oak. The creatures set out through the land after them.
