Plot summary
Hannah and Jack plan a family trip to Japan with their sons Steve and Kyle. Jack works as a NATO AI operator, and rising military tensions in the Middle East keep him at his post, so Hannah and the boys go on their own. They settle into an Airbnb in Tokyo. During a day out in a remote mountain town, Kyle almost drowns in a lake and is rescued by Iriko, a nurse and a family friend. Afterward Kyle's behavior shifts: he becomes obsessed with cucumbers, turns aggressive toward Steve, and vomits green bile. Hannah puts it down to trauma. Jack, monitoring from afar through video calls, looks into the Japanese legend of the Kappa, a water spirit that possesses children, and asks his friend Ryan to investigate.
