Plot summary
Maria and Joseph are a young couple who have been married for six months. They are already facing problems that keep them from enjoying a fulfilling sex life. To address the matter, they turn to a marriage counselor, Alfred, whose traditional psychoanalytic approach does not satisfy Maria. During their sessions, Joseph is shocked to learn Maria has never had a genuine orgasm with him. Maria then reaches out to Baltazar, an alternative sex therapist. Joseph is an architect who works at a construction site.

- Bliss was initially given an NC-17 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America because of its extensive erotic scenes and sexually explicit dialogue. Writer-director Lance Young contested the rating through numerous re-submissions and an appeals board, and the film was released with an R rating after several scene omissions and script edits.
- To prepare for the role of Maria in the erotic drama Bliss, Sheryl Lee researched psychology and attended a tantric sex workshop.
- Craig Sheffer was hired as the lead of Bliss after Leigh Taylor-Young recommended him to her brother, writer-director Lance Young. The two had worked together on the TV series The Hamptons, where she played his mother.
