Plot summary
Rae Doole is a young sex addict whose boyfriend, Ronnie Morgan, leaves for a deployment with the Tennessee National Guard. While he is away she drifts into drug use and promiscuity. Gill Morton, a friend of Ronnie's, makes advances toward her during one of her binges; she mocks his advances, and he beats her badly. Thinking her dead, he pushes her from his truck beside the road and drives away. Lazarus Redd, a religious farmer and onetime blues guitarist in Tennessee, is bitter over an affair his wife had with his brother. The next morning he finds her lying beside the road and takes her back to his farmhouse to tend her wounds. When he learns of her habits, he decides his faith requires him to cure her, and chains her to a radiator.

- For Black Snake Moan, Christina Ricci wore an actual 40 lb chain that stretched 30 to 40 feet and ate only foods of no nutritional value to achieve a sickly look. She stayed scantily clad even off-camera, prompting Samuel L. Jackson to tell her, "Put some clothes on!"
- In April 2008, Christina Ricci called the film's promotional poster exploitative of women, saying the way it was marketed was one of the most disappointing and upsetting things that had ever happened in her career, and that marketing bosses only cared about college-age boys seeing it.
- Christina Ricci said the rough sex scenes were painful, partly because her co-star, rap producer David Banner, had no previous acting experience; of one scene with Banner she said she was being hurt and that it kind of felt like being raped.
