Plot summary
An engineer for an oil company has been kidnapped in a West African country where Carlos once worked as a development cooperator. Carlos is an unscrupulous Spanish executive now based in Brussels, and his ties to that country are old and deep. He agrees to negotiate and is sent in as a mediator. His business interests and his personal history collide, and the country he returns to is divided by ethnic tensions and marked by government abuses. A large-scale scheme of political and corporate corruption lies behind the case.
