Plot summary
Shawna is fifteen and lives in post-Katrina New Orleans with her father and her brother. She is uneasy about her dark skin, and her mother, Denise, is caught up in a drug addiction in the run-down Ombreaux housing project. One night, on her way back from a party, vampires set upon her. She is bitten but does not turn, and the attack opens her eyes to the fact that the city's homeless and other vulnerable people are being hunted. Shawna decides to act. Her friend Pedro, the boy she has a crush on, Chris, and a rich and eccentric girl named Granya all join her, and the four of them start looking into who is behind the attacks.
