Plot summary
Rose Casper performs autopsies and keeps to herself, more comfortable around the morgue's cadavers than around people. She dislikes the idea of female biological reproduction but is absorbed by its clinical processes, gestating material inside her own body in search of a way to revive the dead. Celie Morales delivers babies as a maternity nurse and raises her five-year-old daughter, Lila, alone. When Lila dies suddenly and lands on Rose's autopsy table, the circumstances of her death make her a candidate for Rose's experiment. Lila comes back, barely clinging to life, and the two women find they need each other's very different skills to keep her that way.

- No permission was granted to use the children's cartoon Wonder Pets!, so the cartoon Rescue Birds was created specifically for the film; director Lee Moss said the show's team never called back because "they wanted nothing to do with this movie."
- Birth/Rebirth was greenlit in March 2020, but all work on the film was halted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Lee Moss wrote a 60-page first draft consisting mainly of imagery and story ideas, then Brendan J. O'Brien outlined the plot and wrote the second; Moss said O'Brien's "drafts are too long, my drafts are too short," and they batted scenes back and forth.
