Plot summary

Bullies take the money Joe Weider earns as a boy in Montreal, and his mother does not want him. The magazines of Bill Hauk turn him toward working out, and he draws muscular men and becomes a competitive weightlifter. His father supports him while his mother believes he is wasting his life. He leaves home with his brother Ben and studies bodies and fitness, believing that training can improve anyone's life and not only win contests. At a university library he meets his first wife, and he quits a job with an anti-Semitic restaurant owner. When World War II comes, Ben enlists, while Joe is told that helping men get fit does more for the military than serving would.
