A role that slipped away
Hoechlin first wanted a baseball career and put it ahead of acting, so he turned down auditions and meetings, among them one with director Francis Ford Coppola, and said no to playing Emmett Cullen in the Twilight films.
First role
Hoechlin was an older child when he got his first role, at age 11, in Happy Haunting, which was a Disney Sing-Along Songs video.
Big break
In 2016, Hoechlin landed the part of Superman on the CW series Supergirl. Producer Greg Berlanti wanted him first for the role, so he skipped the audition.
A change of course
Hoechlin played baseball at Arizona State and UC Irvine, and his Arizona State team reached the College World Series in Omaha.
Getting ready for a role
Hoechlin drew on his baseball experience to play team captain McReynolds in Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!!, for which the cast lived together for three weeks.
