Plot summary
Spring has arrived in the forest, and the creatures there are enjoying the day. Big Buck Bunny, a large and fluffy rabbit, meets a trio of rodent bullies: Frank the flying squirrel, who leads the group, and his sidekicks Rinky, a red squirrel, and Gimera, a chinchilla. The three pass their time throwing fruit, nuts and stones at the animals around them, and they take particular pleasure in harassing the rabbit. When their throwing kills two butterflies and they then attack Bunny himself, he sets his gentle nature aside and begins to work out a plan to avenge the butterflies.

- Big Buck Bunny was the first project the Blender Foundation made through the Blender Institute, a division the foundation set up specifically to create open content films and games.
- While the film was being made, Blender developers improved hair and fur rendering, the particle system, UV mapping, shading, the render pipeline, constraints and skinning, and introduced approximate ambient occlusion; all the features were released to the public with Blender 2.46.
- Because it is freely redistributable, available as a lossless source and mixes flat and detailed scenes with high contrast and high motion, Big Buck Bunny is often used as a stress test for video codecs.
