Plot summary
Two Manhattanites, Prudence and Bruce, are each looking for a stable romantic relationship. Both are in therapy, and their psychiatrists, the lecherous Stuart and the scatterbrained Charlotte, advise each of them to place a personal ad and meet someone that way. The first meeting between Prudence and Bruce is a disaster. When they try again, they begin to get along well, and something starts between them. Bruce, meanwhile, lives with Bob, his bisexual lover, who is jealous of the new arrival and has no intention of sharing Bruce. Bob sets out to defend his place in Bruce's life and keep the household as it is.

- Christopher Durang and Robert Altman each wrote separate screenplays for the adaptation of Durang's play. Altman then substantially rewrote Durang's script, and Durang later called the project "a very unhappy experience and outcome."
- Although the film is set in New York City, it was shot in Paris, because director Robert Altman was living there at the time.
