Plot summary

Ellen Jones is an agent of the CIA. She is handed orders to seek out and destroy a professor who has been trading government material with foreign powers. When she finds him, the professor shows her that he holds intelligence so powerful that she cannot go through with the order, and she lets him live. The two of them, an unlikely pair, then set off together on a road trip across the barren stretches of England. Their new mission is to save humankind, and a bounty hunter called The Guardian, who moves through time, is hunting the pair along the way.
