Plot summary
Gail cannot leave the house, so she fills her days with romance novels and shares her home with her Nan, who has just come back from the hospital. The two of them edge toward one another, each trying to break the isolation they live in. Rob is sinking deeper into his addiction, using it to blunt the pain of losing his girlfriend, and in his stupor he pictures holding her. Mr and Mrs Gladwin have spent sixty years together. Resentment and things left unsaid have set a barrier between them, and Mrs Gladwin, in her enduring love, works at it with small gestures.
