Plot summary
In 1987, Doris Duke, a tobacco heiress, takes on Bernard Lafferty as her majordomo. Elizabeth Taylor and Peggy Lee are listed among his former employers, and he explains a six-month hole in his work record as health issues, his phrase for time in rehab. Doris is brash and often crude, and she cannot pronounce his name. Bernard moves into her household, hangs pictures of his old employers in his bedroom, and tells the staff that he speaks for Miss Duke. Doris comes home from a plastic surgery center, drunk and on painkillers, and he stays with her until morning.
