Plot summary
In 1970s Italy, the Berberian film studio brings in Gilderoy, a British sound engineer, to build the soundtrack for a production he takes to be about horses. Producer Francesco corrects him: the picture is a giallo called The Equestrian Vortex, and it is full of torture. Gilderoy goes to work in the studio, using vegetables to make the sounds of violence and layering the voice recordings of Silvia and Claudia into the score. Director Giancarlo Santini refuses to call the film a horror picture. Away from his mother at home, Gilderoy feels increasingly out of his depth among colleagues who are short with him and with each other.
