Plot summary
Hiller reaches Paddington station in London with a boy after a stay in Torquay, unaware that Gort is tailing them. Days later the child is taken and Hiller too, and the pair are held at an empty house where Salto waits. Salto had paid Hiller, a computer programmer, for the security details of a bank near Heathrow, and is furious that what arrived was a tape he cannot read rather than documents. Hiller had gone into hiding with the boy after that and lost his job. Held captive, Hiller faces threats of violence until he decodes the tape, giving Salto what he needs to rob the bank. Salto raises money and brings in The Guv'nor to plan the job.

- Bellman and True was first developed as a three-episode BBC mini-series running 150 minutes, but the budget was too high, so it was split into two versions: one for television and a 120-minute one for cinemas.
- Director Richard Loncraine wanted to shoot the film in black and white for "artistic rather than arty reasons" but was not allowed to, so he gave it what he called a "Van Eyck wash" instead.
- Producer Christopher Neame said production on the film was difficult and plagued by bad weather, which resulted in it going overbudget.
