Plot summary
The superintendent of a small Oklahoma school district hires Clay Driscoll, a young coach from Louisiana, to run its basketball program. While the superintendent is away recovering from a medical condition, the school board's head, Ellis Brawley, the town banker and the founder's great-great grandson, has already hired another man for the boys' team and assigns Clay to the girls instead. The Lady Cyclones are nearer a gym class than a team, and with the town in drought and girls' sports drawing little attention, Clay doubts there is a future for him there. He drives the girls through the same drills and discipline he would use with boys until his wife Jean helps him understand the players in front of him.
