Plot summary
Julia Lambert is a celebrated stage actress in 1938 London, and her husband, Michael Gosselyn, is a former actor who runs the theater and its troupe. Their mentor, Jimmie Langton, whose spirit still visits Julia with advice, left them the company. The couple lead largely separate lives; the passion of their marriage ended long ago. Approaching middle age, Julia grows disenchanted and wants her current play closed so she can travel. Michael and their financial backer, Dolly de Vries, persuade her to perform through the summer instead. Her former lover, Lord Charles, has recently broken things off. To her maid and dresser, Evie, she admits she would like to retire. Michael then introduces her to Tom Fennel, a young American admirer of her work.
