Plot summary
Richie is barely holding on in New York City. His girlfriend, Vista, has disappeared, and he cleans bathroom stalls at a nightclub, where he finds the body of a girl who died of a heroin overdose; the club owner, Bill, has the body removed without telling the authorities. At his apartment, Richie is attempting suicide in his bathtub when his estranged sister, Maggie, calls and asks him to pick up her eleven-year-old daughter, Sophia, from school. Sophia recites an Emily Dickinson poem in English and in Mandarin Chinese. Richie brings Sophia to her apartment, then goes home. Sophia calls to say her mother has not returned, and Richie takes her to the bowling alley where he works, learning that Maggie has been arrested and is awaiting arraignment.
