Plot summary
In the summer of 1990, twelve-year-old Beans lives on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake with her mother Lily, her father, and her little sister Ruby. Lily wants her to apply to a school in Montreal where most students are white, and her father is against the idea. When the family sees their cousin Karahkwenhawi on television protesting a golf course expansion into Mohawk burial ground at Kanesatake, they drive upriver to join the protest. Beans and Ruby are caught in a police raid, and her parents decide to stay and help. Barricades go up, the territory is cut off, and food grows short; women and children are offered a chance to leave.
