Plot summary
The Burned Ones, demonic humanoid creatures drawn to human meat and blood, plague the survivors left on Earth after the Rapture. Azrael and her lover Kenan live with a forest cult that treats speech as a sin and has removed its members' vocal cords. The pair are expelled, and Josephine, one of the cult's leaders, has her henchmen capture them and keep them apart. The cult takes Azrael out to be sacrificed to the Burned Ones, and she breaks free and runs through the woods to the cult's fenced encampment. There Miriam leads as the cult's spiritual interpreter, putting her ear to a hole in a church wall for God's will in the wind.
