Plot summary
Karla studies medicine and cannot sleep. Neither can her brother Blake, who developed Fatal Familial Insomnia after watching their parents die. When the hospital can do nothing more for him, Robert, Karla's instructor, offers another route: an illegal sleep lab he found in a disused basement of the medical campus while exploring the building with Karla's father, who had hoped the same equipment would cure Sarah, their mother. Karla agrees to the move, and at the lab she meets two other insomniacs, Chris and Angela. Patrick, her ex-boyfriend, joins as the pharmacist, which Karla resents because he abandoned her while she was caring for Blake.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Awoken (2019)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Daniel J. Phillips based Awoken's premise on the creepypasta "The Russian Sleep Experiment", and also drew on The Exorcist and The Conjuring films.
- During editing, Phillips and editor Sean Lahiff restructured the film's opening because they had first introduced Karla as a doctor, confusing viewers, and wanted it clear she was a student doctor.
