Plot summary
Paul Carty is nineteen and lives on the Wirral in 1979, in the early years of Margaret Thatcher's government. He has watched The Pack, the Tranmere Rovers hooligans who dress in casual gear and ride the football specials, and after his mother's funeral he runs to catch their train. On board he meets the firm's ex-soldier leader, John Godden, who tells him there is no room for runners and that he must stand his ground, and Elvis, who dismisses the gang and tells Carty he does not want any part of it. Carty begs Elvis to bring him in, and after he headbutts a sales assistant in a record shop, Elvis tells him to be on the train at noon on Saturday. The pair share a taste in music and a wish to leave Birkenhead for Berlin.
