Plot summary
Sam Krichinsky settled in Baltimore after leaving Poland in 1914, and he makes his living hanging wallpaper. By the late 1940s his son Jules Kaye wants to open a big store selling discounted appliances with his cousin Izzy. Jules and his wife Ann live with Eva and Hymie, and Ann learns to drive, though Eva takes the streetcar rather than ride in the car. Money the family sets aside helps more relatives come over, and slights are long remembered. Sam also questions what his grandson Michael is taught at school, or why Jules and Izzy have taken new surnames. When Jules and Ann move to the suburbs, relatives are slow to visit, and Uncle Gabriel reaches Thanksgiving dinner after the turkey has been cut.
