Plot summary
Ava Faulkner, a recovering addict and former soldier, works as an assassin and questions each target about who wants them dead. In France she abducts an English businessman, and a woman eavesdrops on their conversation electronically. Back in Boston she visits Judy, the sister she has not seen in eight years, and their mother Bobbi, hospitalized for angina. Duke, her handler and former Army superior, sends her to Saudi Arabia for a German general; her cover fails, and a gunfight leaves the general's guards dead. Duke apologizes in Barneville-Carteret for the bad intelligence and gives her time off. In Boston, Ava looks up Michael, her former fiancé, who is now with her sister Judy.

- In August 2018, Ava's production drew criticism because Matthew Newton, then set to direct, faced multiple assault and domestic violence allegations and had pleaded guilty to assaulting girlfriend Brooke Satchwell; Jessica Chastain was accused of hypocrisy for working with him, and Newton stepped down, replaced by Tate Taylor.
