Trailer

Plot summary

Wayne is practicing at night in the Arizona desert for his firefighter exam when a meteor comes down near Glen Canyon. The next morning, Ira Kane and Harry Block, who teach biology and geology at the local college, reach the rock in its cave and take a sample of the blue fluid it gives off. Ira Kane finds that the fluid holds countless single-celled organisms, which evolve at an incredible rate. He and Harry Block see a discovery that could mean a Nobel Prize, until the Army takes over the site with Brigadier General Russell Woodman and epidemiologist Allison Reed and shuts the teachers out of their own work.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Evolution (2001)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • David Duchovny discussed roles in Star Wars: Episode II and Episode III with George Lucas but turned them down, partly because of his schedule shooting this movie; he wanted distance from his X-Files character and saw the comic alien film as a way into different roles.
  • Michael J. Fox was offered a lead role in the film but declined it because of his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease.
  • SPOILERIn a desperate attempt to destroy the alien ecosystem, Ira theorises that selenium is toxic to nitrogen-based life forms, and with his students he finds it in selenium sulfide, the active ingredient in Head & Shoulders shampoo.
  • Seann William Scott was cast after impressing Reitman with his performance in Road Trip, another film Reitman produced, and he beat out Jerry Trainor, who was given a smaller role instead.
  • Tippett Studio designed more than 18 distinct alien creatures for the film, making sure each had a unique appearance, while Sony Pictures Imageworks handled the CGI animation for key sequences including the alien flatworm and the pool leech designed by Peter Konig.
