Plot summary
In the town of Ashton, Mike Brady works as health inspector and sewer manager. Ron Bell, an alcoholic, is found dead in his home, his body nearly stripped of skin, and slime trails lead from the basement. Mike and his coworker Don Palmer are called to clear a blocked sewer, where animal carcasses are clogging the pipes. Gardener Harold Morris pulls on a glove with a slug hidden inside, and as he thrashes in pain he knocks over chemical jars; the fire reaches a gasoline tank and the blast kills him and his wife Jean. Mike's wife Kim, a high school teacher, tells him the news, and together they find large, aggressive slugs in their garden. Mike leaves a jar of them with John Foley, the school science teacher, who watches one eat the class hamster.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
SPOILER
Both real and fake slugs were used; the real ones were supplied by Taramundi, the scene where a slug bites Mike Brady's finger was shot with an arm-sized finger operated by Evans and a large puppet, and De Marchis used juvenile eels for David Watson's death to emphasise the gore effects.- Many Spanish and Italian actors spoke their own languages on set, so English voiceovers were recorded in London for the international release, and the English-speaking actors had to re-dub their own lines because the on-set sound recording was poor.
- Interiors were shot in Madrid studios but exteriors in Lyons, New York, hometown of production supervisor Larry Ann Evans, who had moved to Madrid to work with Juan Piquer Simón; Frank LaLoggia's Lady in White was filming in Lyons at the same time.
SPOILER
For the scene where a slug bites Mike Brady's finger, the effects team used an arm-sized fake finger operated by production supervisor Evans and a large puppet, while Carlo De Marchis slipped juvenile eels into shots such as David Watson's death to boost the practical gore.- Because many Spanish and Italian actors spoke their native languages on set, English-dubbed voiceovers were recorded in London, and the English-speaking actors had to re-dub their lines in post-production after the on-set sound recording proved poor.
