Plot summary
Gene Rutkovsky is a veteran of the New York City night shift, and Ollie Cross is the rookie assigned to ride with him. Their calls begin at the scene of a gang shooting, and the man they treat dies on the way to the hospital. A dog bite at a community gym turns into a standoff with a man and a gun. Cross meets Clara at a club, and the paramedic Lafontaine leaves the dead dog in Cross's locker. Between shifts, Cross shares a tiny apartment with two roommates and studies for the MCAT. Rutkovsky's overworking has ended several marriages, and he counts the September 11 response among his years on the job.
