Plot summary
Lina Vilkas is sixteen in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1941, filling her days with plans for art school and a summer of first dates. Her father, Kostas Vilkas, works with the Lithuanian resistance, forging papers that help people escape the Soviet occupation. One night the NKVD rounds up the family. Lina, her mother Elena, her younger brother Jonas and their friend Andrius are put on a train for a gulag in the Altaysky region of Siberia. Lina and her family endure harsh conditions on the journey. An aspiring artist, Lina draws what she sees and hides the drawings from the guards, hoping the pictures will reach her father.
