Plot summary
Devanarayanan is a Brahmin priest in Kerala and the breadwinner of an impoverished family. He loves Aswathy, but her father Govindan Nair opposes the match, and the corrupt businessman Arumukhan is his enemy. The two men, with Inspector Chandrappan, accuse Devanarayanan of stealing the temple's thiruvabharana. Chandrappan arrests him and beats him before the villagers and his family, and after his release his father, believing him guilty, disowns him. Devanarayanan leaves the village for Bombay, where Kunjali and his daughter Sainaba give him shelter at their tea shop. When the thug Martin beats him and takes his necklace, Devanarayanan fights back and wins, and the crime boss Kareem, an ageing don, takes him into his gang.
