Plot summary
Greta is twelve, and her father Tom is moving the family across the country, promising his children a California paradise. Half the household is packed into a dented station wagon, and Greta and Nat travel with him. Their mother is supposed to join them later, and she is the one thing missing. The trip crosses forests, plains and deserts, with stops at fast food joints and shoddy motels, and one stop that is only a pale stand-in for the Grand Canyon.
