Plot summary
Confederate soldiers run a Louisiana plantation where enslaved Black people may not speak unless permitted and those who run are killed. Eden's owner, a general known only as Him, brands her back until she answers to the name Eden. Six weeks on, new captives are brought in, and Jasper's wife Elizabeth lets her daughter pick one of the women, whom the child calls Julia. Eden takes Julia under her care. Another captive, Eli, asks Eden when they might escape again, but Eden seems to have given up hope. Julia, who is pregnant, wants to get away as well, and Eden shows her the brand as a warning. Julia tells Eden she is not a leader. Two young soldiers, Purcell and Daniel, take notice of Julia.
