Plot summary

Elizabeth McGraw left John Gray ten years ago, and he has been depressed and lonely ever since. An invitation to a Paris art exhibit of her paintings sends him to France, hoping to talk with her. At the auction house he acquires her work, but Elizabeth is not there. He notices a woman wearing the shawl he gave Elizabeth years before. She is Lea Calot, a fashion designer who describes herself as Elizabeth's close friend; she says Elizabeth is married and lives in another country.
