Plot summary
At Christmastime in Little Haven, Scotland, Anna Shepherd is about to leave school. She intends to spend a year traveling before university, which her widower father, Tony, dislikes. Her friends carry their own problems: John, an artist, hides his feelings for her; Chris, who makes films, is struggling with a class assignment; and Steph, a transfer student, has been left by her girlfriend over the holiday break and wants her reporting on social justice to get past the vice principal, Mr. Savage. Nick, a boy Anna spent a night with, adds to her difficulties. Lisa, Chris's girlfriend, performs in the school's Christmas show, while Anna and John are at the bowling alley and Chris and Steph are filming Steph's story at a homeless shelter. Around then, a zombie infection starts to spread.

- Development of Anna and the Apocalypse was halted in 2013 when its creator, Ryan McHenry, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma; he died of cancer in May 2015, two years before the film's release, which is dedicated to him.
- Anna and the Apocalypse grew out of Zombie Musical, a short Ryan McHenry wrote and directed in 2010 at Dumfries High School with his friend Naysun Alae-Carew producing, after he took inspiration from High School Musical; it won Best Producer for Alae-Carew at the 2011 British Academy Scotland New Talent Awards.
- After Ryan McHenry died, screenwriter Alan McDonald's initial draft of the script turned darker and more cynical, which he put down to missing his friend, and the team had to find a way to rediscover the joy of the story.
