Plot summary
Marijuana charges bring Ron Decker, twenty-one, slight and privileged, to San Quentin. Earl Copen has served eighteen years and takes the newcomer under his wing, bringing him into his own gang. From his job with the captain of the guards, Copen moves Decker into his cell block and finds him better jobs and food, and he writes reports and offers advice meant to make Decker look like a very small threat to society. A law passed by the legislature lets a judge modify a sentence within the first 120 days, and Decker's lawyer works for a quick release, while Copen has a shot at parole. Around them the prison holds hard drugs, casual racism and a strike by Black prisoners.
