- In 2008, 20th Century Fox offered Michele Placido the film about bank robber Renato Vallanzasca, but he was not interested in directing it. He accepted only after Kim Rossi Stuart, who wanted to play Vallanzasca, approached him.
- The producers had first offered the Vallanzasca film to Medusa Film and Rai Cinema, but both houses rejected the script and refused the rights. In 2010, Michele Placido blamed the "hypocritical respectability" of Italy for their refusal.
