Herbert Mundin
Biography
Herbert Mundin was an English character actor who built a stage career in London during the 1920s before settling in Hollywood. He was born in St Helens in Lancashire and educated at St Albans School, and he served in the Royal Navy during World War I. He first traveled to America in 1923 for theatrical work in New York, and his big break came in Charlot's Revue on Broadway in 1925 with Gertrude Lawrence and Beatrice Lillie. He moved permanently to the United States in 1931 and signed with the Fox Film Corporation, going on to appear in more than fifty films, often typecast as an older cheeky eccentric. His film credits included The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and David Copperfield (1935), in which he played Barkis. He died in 1939.
