Plot summary
The war is over, and in Aleksandra Potapova's village many women, she among them, have been left widows. No one has seen her weep or lose heart, and the villagers respect her firm character. When a meeting is called to present yet another candidate for the chairmanship of the collective farm Zarya, she proposes that a woman take the job, and to her own surprise the community elects her. The cares of the job keep her loneliness at a distance. Getting along with the villagers is not easy, especially with Lykov, the chairman she replaced, and his son Ivan, whom she has been seeing. Her new post draws attention, and she breaks off the romance with Ivan. Her work often brings her together with the district committee secretary Danilov, and love for him grows in her.
