Jonathan Cecil
Biography
Jonathan Cecil was an English actor who was known for comedy and for playing upper-class characters. Born in London in 1939, he grew up in Oxford and studied modern languages at New College, Oxford, before spending two years training at a drama school. His first television part came in 1964 in the BBC series First Night, opposite Vanessa Redgrave, and he then spent eighteen months in repertory at Salisbury. He made his West End debut in 1965 in A Heritage and Its History. On screen he appeared as Ricotin in Fellini's And the Ship Sails On (1983) and as Captain Hastings opposite Peter Ustinov's Hercule Poirot in Thirteen at Dinner (1985), Dead Man's Folly and Murder in Three Acts (1986). He was also known for radio work, including The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and for narrating audio books of P. G. Wodehouse. He died in 2011.

Early training
Cecil trained for two years at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after Oxford, where Michael MacOwan and Vivian Matalon were among his teachers and Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi were fellow students.
First role
In May 1965, Cecil took his first West End role, appearing at the Phoenix in Julian Mitchell's dramatization of A Heritage and Its History, and he earned good notices for it.
Beyond film
Jonathan Cecil lent his voice to audiobooks of numerous P. G. Wodehouse books, giving each character a distinct voice. No other actor, perhaps, became as closely linked with narrating the series.
