Plot summary
Accounts from five former child actors describe sexual abuse by multiple predators in the entertainment industry. Much of the documentary centers on a man who ran an internet company that produced short videos when the web was young and whose house was known for parties with underage boys. Another man owned a small share of that company. The film refers to a director said to have attended some of those gatherings without detailing allegations against him. A journalist says an article about pedophilia in Hollywood was pulled just before it was to run. The documentary limits itself to allegations from people willing to appear on camera and includes archival footage.

- After An Open Secret began its limited US theatrical release in October 2015, it was re-edited to secure a PG-13 rating; it had been rated R for graphic language, and the only change made was censoring the word "blowjob" in two instances.
- After its premiere at Doc NYC, An Open Secret was re-edited to remove mention of Michael Egan's 2014 lawsuit against filmmaker Bryan Singer and three other Hollywood figures, once Egan had withdrawn the suit.
- In July 2015 producers Gabe Hoffman and Matthew Valentinas filed an arbitration against Berg over An Open Secret, accusing her of not supporting the film, delivering it late and incomplete and failing to promote it; Hoffman's company said missing release forms nearly caused it to miss its Doc NYC premiere.
- Michael Egan's cases against four men collapsed a month after they were filed in May 2014, when his prior contradictory statements came to light; his attorneys later settled with Garth Ancier and David Neuman, issuing an apology that called the allegations untrue and paying both a seven-figure sum.
